Who, Who, WHO...

Hey There,

While I was preparing some ideas for the monthly “Conversations with Chen” at the end of the month, I got into an interesting conversation that I wanted to share with you.

Here it is in short...

Networking sucks!

There...I said it.

Why? Because traditional “networking” is all about what you can get from others. It’s too “me, me, me” orientated which may have worked in the old economy but most people can see through this approach. (You get that feeling...*shakes*)

In the new education era, it’s important to give before you receive. It’s important to plant seeds for a community and connect with a genuine interest in people.

It’s important to know what information you can give away that will lead people down your path to purchase.

Because if you deliver your information in a structured way, it allows you to meet people at the level they are at.

“But Chen, it’s about WHO you know?”

Listen, I know many people go to these networking events to get their name out there, while others are there to prospect for new customers.

Look, I get it. I’ve been there myself. And if you are starting out, I recommend you get to a few of these events but go and share your best stuff.

Networking is an important communication skill for leaders and your ability to connect and engage people in conversation will reflect your ability to convert them to action.

***Spoiler Alert***

I’m going to be very honest with you and tell you something that no one is going to say...not to your face anyway.

It’s a little secret that experts who play on the higher level know and rarely share...but I feel it’s important you know the truth, so here it is:

“It’s not WHO you know these days, it’s WHO knows you...”

Read that carefully...again.

In the old days, it was true that WHO you knew would open doors of opportunity for you. And while that still remains true in some areas, a better strategy is to great results and have people talking about you.

How do I know?

Because that’s how I’ve helped build some of the biggest brands and personalities. When you get results, the market will demand more of you.

So instead of getting distracted with all the opportunities available, stay focused on getting great results in ONE area.

The industry is filled with too many people who are trying to sell the story of ONE success...the old zero to hero story which is often filled with holes.

And the holes magnify the higher they climb because they are desperate to make as much money as possible before someone “exposes” them.

Don’t do it. A marathon isn’t won in one continuous sprint. You must strategize, pace yourself and be willing to complete the race. (i.e do the work.)

You see, I’ve been involved in coaching and mentoring programs before and I’ve never seen mediocrity rise above excellence.

Here’s why: the successful people are usually successful before they entered the environment. (But Shhhh, don’t tell anyone that...)

So this is about creating your own personal environment for productivity, performance and profitability.
